Beach Nourishment

electric pumps against coastal erosion

Coastal erosion is a global challenge that threatens not only the natural ecosystem but also the economy linked to beach tourism. Extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and not always suitable infrastructure interventions accelerate the disappearance of beaches. To counter this process, Aquageo offers technologically advanced and environmentally friendly coastal nourishment solutions.

Two exemplary interventions have been carried out in top tourist locations: where the use of electric pumps has allowed the coastline to be effectively and discreetly restored.

The challenge: combating erosion without disrupting tourist activity

In high-density tourist areas, the progressive reduction of the beach has a direct impact on accommodation capacity and economic prospects. Both private operators and public entities require reclamation interventions that are:

  • effective in the long term: to move large volumes of sand and restore coastal profiles;

  • sustainable: with technologies that respect the surrounding marine ecosystem;

  • silent and non-invasive: to avoid interfering with tourists' stays and the daytime activities of accommodation facilities.

The Aquageo solution: EL12.5 electric pumps for sand dredging

To meet these needs, Aquageo provided the EL12.5 electric pumps, an ideal technology for pumping abrasive mixtures such as water and sand.

The operational strategy adopted included:

  • offshore positioning: the pumps were placed at a distance of about 100-150 meters from the shore, extracting sand directly from underwater deposits;

  • hydraulic transport: the material was sent to the area to be restored through a flexible pipeline, ensuring precise sediment distribution;

  • nighttime operations: to eliminate visual and acoustic impact on bathers, reclamation and nourishment operations were carried out at night. By morning, the beach was again usable and regenerated, without any inconvenience for tourists.

The use of electric motors, compared to traditional diesel systems, ensured a drastic reduction in noise emissions and the absence of fuel spill risks in the sea.

The benefits for the client and the territory

The nourishment intervention with EL12.5 electric pumps guaranteed excellent results on several fronts.

  • Immediate beach restoration: recovery of the sandy surface necessary for beach activities.

  • Environmental respect: the use of electric technologies ensures clean and silent dredging, essential in protected or environmentally valuable areas.

  • Zero impact on tourism: thanks to nighttime planning, the work did not interrupt the tourist season, preserving the revenue of the facilities.

  • Logistical efficiency: the remote pumping system avoided the use of heavy machinery on the sand, protecting the stability of the coastline.
